About the recent babywearing warning.....

The government has recently issued a warning about the safety of baby carriers which could lead to some confusion about babywearing. I wanted to make sure that you are aware that the sling in question is an Infantino, put out by Sling Rider and looks like this:

Sling Rider

This is NOT the type of sling I sell. The warning also expressed concern about a baby's ability to breath while in a sling. I wanted to clarify that the only danger where is when a young baby is in the sling in such a way so that her chin is pushing into her chest. This is not proper positioning and I warn babywearers not to have their baby in this position in the instructions that come with my slings. This is only a potential danger when an infant is inclined in the sling. If you are very concerned about this, you do not have to use an inclined position at all to sill use your sling for an infant. You can simply use the tummy to tummy position, which poses no breathing dangers at all.

Babywearing is like everything else in life, in that it is completely safe when done properly. It is very healthy for mom and baby and I find it to be a sanity saver. I can't tell you how many meals I would have missed out on eating with my family, had I not been able to sling a nursing baby (or last night I was slinging a bottle drinking baby and only needed to use one hand for baby's bottle and could eat with the other). Much housework around here would not have been done, and I would not have have had my hands free to play with my other children, who also still need time with mommy.

So don't let this warning scare you. Please just make sure that you don't use an Infantino and just make sure that no matter which sling you decide to use that your baby's chin is never pushed into her chest. Please feel free to email me or comment if you have any questions about any of this.
